Debilitating accident motivates Joy Tashjian to focus on helping others

Posted on March 1, 2019

“Six years ago, I returned to school as an adult learner to pursue an Associate’s Degree in nursing. My decision was influenced by two significant life events. I chose to make a career change from teaching to nursing following a car accident that left me disabled for over a year. During my time in rehabilitation, I gained an appreciation for the impact that nursing professionals have on their patients,” Joy explained. “I had been interested in the profession when I was younger, as two of my aunts are Registered Nurses, but I felt I was too sensitive to treat patients who were in chronic pain or distress. Working closely with the nurses who were assigned to my care made me realize how suited I was to the profession.”

“After I recuperated from my accident, I became a Certified Nurses’ Aide,” Joy said. “Shortly thereafter, my grandmother suffered a stroke. I felt fortunate that I was able to serve as her caregiver and advocate during this challenging time. I was impressed and touched by the dedication and skill of her nursing team. After she passed, I completed my Associate’s Degree in Nursing at Florida Southwestern State College, and am on schedule to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in August of 2018. I have chosen to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing in order to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Over the past few years, I have polished my clinical skills, and now wish to expand my knowledge in order to provide an advanced level of care to the residents of Collier County. I am prepared to meet these challenges, and will work tirelessly to achieve my goals.”
